Let's Pop, Pop, Popcorn! A Picture Book Review and Giveaway

Today my 9-year-old granddaughter, Libbie, is helping me review books. Here's her first review of a recent Sleeping Bear Press picture book.

 Guest Reviewer Libbie K.

REVIEW

Let's Pop, Pop, Popcorn! by Cynthia Schumerth, is a good book for little kids showing them the process of making popcorn. It includes how to plant, water, and grow corn and all the work that goes into it.

I think kids will also like this book's clever rhymes.

The illustrations, by Mary Reaves Uhles, are also very well done and show exactly how to grow corn and make popcorn.

This is an easy book to read and it makes me want to get up, pop some buttered popcorn, and eat it! You can always sit down and eat popcorn while you are reading this fun book (just make sure not to get buttery fingers on the book! 🍿 😂). This book was very good and I recommend it to 3-6 year olds. Or just about any age!

BACK MATTER

Did you know there are four types of corn? If you read the STEM  information and activities you will learn the differences between dent corn, flint corn, sweet corn, and popcorn, as well as the layers inside each kernel. Readers will discover what old maids are and have fun with two different popcorn activities. And like Libbie suggested, there's always good eating when someone says, Let's Pop, Pop, Popcorn!

I found this cute reading of Let's POP, POP, POPCORN on youtube!

My favorite popcorn stories are from my grandma often making popcorn over the stove in a kettle pan shaking it until the popcorn popped out overflowing - my husband loved it so much he made my grandma’s way of popping popcorn a family tradition every Sunday night in our home.

My favorite memory of about popcorn is my dad doing the popping. Then he'd pour it into a large yellow mixing bowl and carefully putting just the right amount of butter on it. My sisters and I would spread out a blanket in front of the TV and we'd watch Disney. Popcorn is still a favorite treat for my entire family. I'd love to share the popcorn book with my grandkids.

I love that you are encouraging your granddaughter to read and think critically about the books she enjoys. Way to go Grandma! My favorite popcorn story is when the kids and I made homemade popcorn balls and drizzled them with chocolate and caramel. So delicious!

Wh we nmy kids were little popping popcorn and talking about popcorn and making popcorn sticky sculptures was the rage. Popcorn is timeless.

Hi Libby! When I was a child we did not have microwaves and had to pop popcorn over the burner on the stove. Sometimes we would use Jiffy Pop Popcorn and have to continually shuffle the tin pie pan over the stove top flame so the popcorn would not burn. It was fun to watch the foil top grow and grow into a large bubble as the corn popped! It was also tricky to not burn the popcorn! If we did not use Jiffy pop popcorn sometimes we'd use a large skillet with a bit of oil add the popcorn kernels and and top it with a lid. Shaking it constantly had to be done until the skillet was filled to the very top. Sometimes if you took the lid off while the corn was still popping it would jump all over the kitchen!

Thanks, Ann! Your name is in twice!

I think Libbie has a future as a writer! And the book looks fabulous. Definitely something I'd like to have for popcorn parties at my house. Thanks for all the wonderful giveaways.

Carol Baldwin said...

Thanks, Barbara. Her first choice is becoming a vet--In her book that wins over being a writer!

Carol Baldwin said...

Thanks, Rosi. I'll tell her you said that!
